LOS ANGELES, CA—The Philippines’ Charice Pempengco is a mainstream star at 16. Her continuing rise in the world of entertainment is incredibly fast and unstoppable. Her talent as a singer is A-1. And so are her beauty and charm.
On April 13, 2009, she sang the U.S. national anthem, “Star Spangled Banner”, before 57,099 people at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
The day, Monday, was certainly not ordinary.
April 13 marked the opening home game of the Dodgers in the 2009 regular Major League Baseball season. The L.A. team added “multiflavors” to the occasion with an 11-1 victory over another strong and fabled team, the San Francisco Giants. Los Angeles is baseball town, as the rest of America, where the game is esteemed, and raved about, as “the national pastime”.
Back to Charice, the star. “A newly-minted teen celebrity,” says a fellow sportswriter, “who is set to conquer the ultimate horizons in showbiz.”
Los Angeles Times columnist T. J. Simers had Charice in the lead paragraph of his column of April 14. Simers said Charice gave “the best national anthem rendition I have ever heard” and quotes Dodger star catcher Russell Martin as saying “[the rendition] was better than the game”. Dodgers General Manager Joe Torre, in a comment also prominently played up in Simers’ report, spoke of “tears in my eyes when she [Charice] really gets going”.
Our paper’s Marketing Analyst, Joy M. Lasala, authoritative with her in-depth views of and attendance at artistic events, remarked that “there is no way to describe Charice’s stature in entertainmentville except to say that she is phenomenal, and her rise meteoric. A star is born and, if I may pick up an idiom, she will keep the medals rolling in”.
Undoubtedly busy, Charice has her hands full with activities right at the core of American showbiz.
She is in a Century Fox movie, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakqueal”, due for release in December 2009. Among the people Charice has impressed most is Director Betty Thomas.
An avid fan of Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys, the mesmerizing Philippine performer has been a guest of Oprah Winfrey in the “Oprah” show.
Charice also performed at one of the Washington, D.C., presidential inaugural balls commemorating the historic White House victory of Barack Obama.
Reviews of her performances are plenty. Reams of media copy point to a zooming, splurging career in entertainment. Initially, as a singer. Now, as a singer-actress! Good luck, Charice!
